In the closing moments of the episode Kai-125 sits with Master Chief and asks him if he is the real John, but he doesn't reply thus suggesting that the real Spartan could really be dead. In a bid to make both happen, Master Chief gives Cortana (Jen Taylor) control over his body, seemingly dying before she does so and successfully takes the Keystones back to the Spartan spaceship.Īs they escape Cortana remains silent as she helps one fallen Spartan from the brink of death, but Kai-125 (Kate Kennedy) seems to suspect that something is amiss with their leader.

However, in the real world Makee is suddenly killed leaving Master Chief with a difficult choice: save his team from annihilation or get the Artifacts from the Covenant. In that time the Covenant put the Artifacts together to discover the location of the Sacred Ring and Makee, hoping to save Master Chief, uses them to send them both to their shared vision of the Halo ringworld where she asks him to stay. The Spartan persuades his superiors to let him and his fellow soldiers go after the 'Blessed One' themselves and find where the Covenant are based, thus saving the lives of other humans that might have died in the fight between the two forces.Īfter a journey through space that almost killed them, Master Chief and the Silver Team arrive at Covenant territory where they immediately go to battle in a fight scene reminiscent of the original first-person shooter games. Halo episode 9 opens moments after its penultimate episode ended, with Master Chief waking up after being knocked out when Makee (Charlie Murphy) escaped from UNSC headquarters with the Artifacts. I assume those kinds of stories will be explored in campaign expansions like how Destiny does it.Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief in "Halo." Adrienn Szabo/Paramount+ 'Halo' Season 1 Ending Explained or are we to assume that everyone in the audio logs has died in the past six months?), but they didn't go that direction, which still ended up being cool. The whole game I thought we were gonna build up the squad and find all the major characters on the ring (Lasky's certainly on it somewhere. I don't assume Locke is actually dead, I'd be pretty disappointed with that. They straight up put the helmet of the previous game's protagonist on the pauldron of an enemy deemed a spartan killer and didn't actually acknowledge it at all. If there's one immediate comment I have to make it's that I was SO disappointed that Chief didn't have a comment to make when I killed Hyperius and looked at Locke's helmet on his shoulder. The entire thing just felt like one big love letter to the Halo series.

It took me about 20ish hours, 343 fucking nailed it. Man there is so much to unpack with this story. I heard one mention of Locke, and Blue Team potentially being out on their own missions, were there others that I missed with any elaboration? Any mentions of Buck anywhere? It was nice to hear Lasky in those audio logs. I guess we don't see corpses, so they could always bring them back if they wanted.

I can understand frustration with where they'd taken the series, and having a massive army of Spartan-IVs does negate a lot of threats, so clearing them off the board makes sense, but part of me is still going to miss all those characters. Especially because the major story beats that it was replaced with was introducing another ancient alien race that we don't even really get to see. Having spent the last two games turning her into a villain and then having her redemption story all done before the game even starts and then shown in flashback wasn't all that narratively satisfying to me. Finished a bit ago, and I've been mulling over it and while I adore the gameplay and had a great time throughout, the lore pervert in me can't help but be a bit disappointed with what they did with Cortana.
